Nurturing Future Careers Under CBC: Insights from Our Second Webinar

On Thursday 28th November 2024, Meira Africa Education Solutions hosted its second engaging webinar in the series designed to empower parents navigating the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya. The theme, Nurturing Future Careers Under CBC, attracted an attentive audience of parents eager to better understand how CBC can support their child’s career journey.

We were honoured to host Livingstone Makori, Founder of Corporate Career Academy, a Certified Career Analyst, and a Life Purpose Coach. With a wealth of experience in guiding young people towards fulfilling career paths, Livingstone delivered a thought-provoking presentation that explored how the CBC framework aligns with future career opportunities and equips children with practical skills for the modern world.

Highlights of the Webinar

  1. How to Identify and Nurture Your Child’s Strengths and Interests Livingstone emphasized the importance of parents observing and celebrating their child’s natural inclinations from an early age. By identifying these strengths, parents can help their children build on their passions, boosting confidence and providing a sense of direction.

Key takeaway: Parents should actively engage their children in diverse activities—both academic and extracurricular—to discover what excites and motivates them.

  1. CBC’s Career Pathways and Their Relevance to the Future of Work The CBC curriculum’s structure offers three main career pathways:
  • Arts and Sports Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

Livingstone broke down each pathway, explaining how they align with Kenya’s evolving job market and global career trends. He highlighted CBC’s focus on equipping learners with critical skills, such as problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration, which are essential for thriving in a dynamic world.

Key takeaway: CBC is not just about academics; it’s about preparing learners to be well-rounded individuals ready for various industries and roles.

  1. Empowering Children to Make Informed, Purpose-Driven Choices As parents, it is crucial to support children in making educational and career decisions that align with their values, passions, and long-term goals. Livingstone shared actionable tips on:
  • Having open, non-judgmental conversations about career aspirations.
  • Seeking mentorship and career counselling to provide children with role models and realistic guidance.
  • Encouraging resilience and adaptability, are traits that will help children navigate challenges in their career journey.

Key takeaway: Empowered children make informed decisions. CBC’s learner-centred approach gives them the confidence to choose their paths wisely.

Insights from the Q&A Session

The interactive Q&A session allowed parents to address their concerns directly with the expert. Questions ranged from understanding how CBC assessments work to how to balance academics and extracurricular activities. Livingstone emphasized that CBC’s holistic approach ensures no talent goes unnoticed, making it easier for learners to transition into career pathways that suit their abilities and interests.

Why This Matters for Parents

The transition to CBC has presented parents with a steep learning curve. Gone are the days of solely relying on school performance rankings. Today, the focus is on a child’s overall development, including skills, creativity, and passion.

This webinar reinforced that parents play a critical role in shaping their child’s future by actively engaging in their education journey. By understanding CBC’s structure and its emphasis on competency, parents can:

  • Guide their children more effectively.
  • Encourage exploration of interests without the pressure of traditional academic success.
  • Prepare their children to be competitive and adaptable in the global job market.
